Curve appeal: Design features set Kildonan Green show home apart

When Spencer Curtis and his design team at Hilton Homes conceived the great room design of The Evelyn -- a 2,055-square-foot, two-storey show home at 386 Kildonan Meadow Drive in Kildonan Green -- they put a lot of thought into how unique design features would improve the main level's style and function.

"This design is different, and I really like how it turned out," he said. "We put in two curved walls at the front of the home: One behind the dining/flex room off the foyer and another one farther up at the entrance of the great room. I think the two walls open things up and create interest."

The wide entrance sets up the next design feature, he added.

"When you enter the great room, you come into a space that's wide open, bright and spacious. We put a vaulted ceiling over the whole area and added windows to increase light flow," he explained. "The open entryway allows light to flow nicely from the back to the front of the home and vice-versa, as a large window in the dining/flex room makes the front of the home bright, too."

Surrounded by nine windows (plus deck door) and placed beneath the vaulted ceiling, the great room possesses more than its fair share of wow factor. Although the area is open, there's enough definition to ensure it doesn't feel like a big box with a trio of spaces plunked down within it.

A seven-foot island with sink and eating nook for two to three defines the kitchen, while the (generous) dinette area was placed by two large windows. Meanwhile, the family room -- which is adjacent to a bank of six huge windows and features a cultured stone gas fireplace set next to a dark oak entertainment unit and TV niche -- is a spectacular spot to repair for coffee, tea and conversation after dinner.

"I really like how the whole area turned out," Curtis said. "Eating at the dinette is almost like sitting in a sunroom, while the kitchen looks out on to the family room so you can stay connected when entertaining. The idea was to create an efficient plan. Once that was accomplished, we then put in some well-appointed options."

Those options include espresso maple cabinets, a taupe/mocha/stainless tile backsplash, taupe laminate countertops and dark, wide-plank engineered oak hardwoods. The darker tones perfectly offset the great room's brightness and volume, creating a warm space.

A wing to the right of the foyer finishes off the main level in practical style with a laundry room, closet and door to the garage.

"I think the (efficient) layout makes the home feel bigger than its listed square footage, not that 2,055 sq. ft. is all that small," he said.

The upper level benefits from the same efficient floor plan. There's plenty of glass -- starting with a massive window next to the upper-level stairwell -- to let in loads of daylight. The landing next to the bedroom wing is spectacular, said Curtis.

"It's a great area. We put in a one-third wall with a tempered-glass insert (and dark oak capping) so light would come through from the great room, and so you'd also have a nice view of the room below. It's a big landing, so you can even put in a reading chair if you want."

While the landing next to the bedroom wing is generous, there's hardly any hallway to take space away from the three bedrooms and four-piece main bath. Both secondary bedrooms are larger than normal, one with a walk-in closet, one with a display niche for toys or trophies.

Then, there's the master suite, with its angled, double-wide entrance.

"Because it's such an important space for parents -- it's their retreat -- we wanted it to be the best space for them," said Curtis. "The double doors welcome you in, there's lots of space, a big picture window that lets in all kinds of light and a huge ensuite with five-foot shower and a nice big vanity. There's also a big walk-in closet with a window and there's a soaker tub next door in the main bath."

With another 700-plus square feet of liveable space downstairs (rec room, bathroom, storage/mechanical, one to two bedrooms) and a large, open dining room that could serve as an office or play space, the home will help families stay ahead of the curve on every level.
