WinnipegREALTORS says 2011’s unit-sales total of 13,065 was only 13 sales short of the annual record set in 2007.

WINNIPEG — Winnipeg’s resale homes market had its best December ever, pushing unit sales for the year above the 13,000 mark for only the second time in more than a century of record keeping.

WinnipegREALTORS said 698 properties sold last month through its Multiple Listing Service (MLS). That was an increase of seven per cent from December 2010’s 653. And that helped boost the dollar volume of sales for the month to $182 million — an increase of 19 per cent from a year earlier.

“December sales have never been at the 700-level mark before, nor has the dollar volume climbed so high to $182 million — a total that is leaps and bounds over any previous December,” the association said.

It also noted 2011’s unit-sales total of 13,065 was only 13 sales short of the annual record set in 2007. And as earlier reported, the dollar volume of sales last year topped the $3-billion mark for the first time in the association’s 108-year history, finishing at $3.06 billion. That was a 12 per cent improvement over 2010’s $2.73 billion.

“Pleasantly surprised and pleased at how we finished 2011 would be an accurate reflection of how we feel, given our expectations were more muted at the beginning of the year,” said Ralph Fyfe, the WR’s outgoing president.

“As the year progressed, it became evident momentum was on our side and it carried us all the way through to a record dollar volume year and a near miss on achieving a new benchmark for sales.”
