When a new home wins a Parade of Homes award, it’s no accident.

To pocket the hardware, a builder must come up with a plan that’s equal parts style and substance and also forward-thinking in its overall design. Built in 2004 by Randall Homes, 1284 Scurfield Blvd. — a 1,962-square-feet, two-storey gem — feels as contemporary as any of today’s new designs.

"I think the first thing that strikes you about the home is its overall layout," says Royce Finley of Royal LePage Prime Real Estate. "It’s very open and flows exceptionally well. It’s also naturally bright, with huge, well-placed windows surrounding the main living area."

There’s little to distinguish this home from a new home in terms of its layout. The foyer leading into the great room is approximately six feet wide and offers plenty of room for multiple guests or family members to remove footwear and outerwear in comfort.

The dinette area is bright and spacious and offers a solarium-like feel — thanks to a pair of huge windows and a patio door. "Not only does it let in all kinds of natural light, but the patio door leads out to a big deck and huge, fenced backyard," Finley says.

"And a beautiful display/storage unit with maple capping divides the dinette neatly from the family room, which is an absolutely gorgeous space."

The family room is indeed gorgeous and features a 17-foot high ceiling, window-filled rear wall, custom entertainment unit, gas fireplace with grey tile trim with a feature wall that stretches all the way up to the ceiling and is capped off with stylish crown moulding — resulting in a spectacular, light-filled space that’s ideal for entertaining.

The adjacent, extra-wide staircase — which has a massive, obscured glass window set over a compact landing — overlooks the family room, then leads upstairs to a bright, family-friendly second floor. To the left is a bonus room with another large window that could serve as a media room or study area. A curved wall frames the main landing and sweeps stylishly toward the master suite, while a hallway to the left leads to two oversized bedrooms with large windows and a four-piece main bath with a black-and-white marble floor, soaker tub and natural maple vanity.

"The master suite features a double-door entrance and provides all the creature comforts any couple would want," Finley says. "There’s a three-piece ensuite with a corner shower and big walk-in closet with tons of built-in shelving and a mirrored armoire with drawers and organizers. It’s a private space that has a very relaxing feel to it."

Not to be overlooked is the home’s fully finished basement, which is also a cut above the norm, adds Finley. "It’s like another main level, it’s so bright and comfortable," he says.

"A huge, obscured glass window over the stairs allows natural light to pour in from above, while a series of large windows let in more light, making it unusually bright. There’s a media/theatre area, games area and wet bar and wine cellar in the rec room, as well as a big fourth bedroom, powder room with black marble floor and huge mechanical/storage room with a high-efficiency furnace. It might be the best part of the home."
