As usual -- this is Manitoba, after all -- the wind is blowing briskly (and thankfully) from a southerly direction. Although the wind speed is a bit high for most people's liking, it's only a minor irritant.

That's because as you stand on a three-tiered brick patio surveying the trees and gently rolling terrain that runs down to the Red River -- with wind chimes humming a gentle, hypnotic tune that somehow salves the soul -- you feel as if you've happened upon a piece of parkland paradise.

In actuality, says Sutton Group Kilkenny Real Estate's Greg Michie, you've happened upon an English country manor on the prairie.

"From the moment you enter the gated, private driveway, you feel like you've been transported to an elegant English country manor," he says. "Situated on five acres of land that surrounds you with colourful gardens, majestic trees and manicured lawns -- with the historic Red River as the backdrop -- you're in a gorgeous world of your own."

At 4,654 square feet, 245 River Rd. (or Tarrow House) requires a huge parcel of land to house its laterally-dispersed frame. With its textured exterior and cedar shake roof, it truly looks the part of an English manor.

The same can also be said for its interior. Entrance to the sprawling abode is gained by setting foot in a grand foyer with blue granite flooring. Directly across is a wall of latticed windows (fanning out to both the left and right) that provides a panoramic view of the three-tiered patio out back -- and, of course, majestic river views.

Once you manage to tear yourself away from the enchanting view, the next thing you notice is the oak-beamed ceiling, which matches the oak window trim (and staircase to the left). Other features like solid oak, raised panel doors and oak hardwoods also grab your attention. As spectacular as the outdoor setting is, the indoor setting isn't far behind (if at all).

"No expense was spared -- the European-inspired craftsmanship in this home is simply incredible," Michie says. "Take the dining room, for example -- it's simply elegant with its burled pecan wainscotting on the walls, to the oak crown molding and oak-trimmed medallion ceiling with classic crystal chandelier. The great room, living room and master bedroom also have the same medallion ceilings."

Perhaps the most striking feature of the home -- amazing finishing materials aside -- is the amount of glass that's present, from the extended foyer through literally every other room, both on the main and upper level. Michie says there's no better place to enjoy the setting from than the main floor sunroom.

"The views from there are just fabulous," he says. "It's not only huge, but it's nicely finished with wall-to-wall carpeting and wood-paneled walls. It also provides access to the back patio. There's also a breakfast nook through an arched french door beside another pair of large windows. You've not only got another great view, but touches like a built-in cherrywood cabinet that add even more warmth to the atmosphere."

While the home's interior warmth complements the outdoor setting, there's also no shortage of luxury. A prime example of that is the master suite (found on the main floor), says Michie.

"It's larger than the norm with oak hardwood flooring, a walk-in closet as well as a second double closet, ornate crown moulding and large bow window with built-in window seat. The ceiling offers pot lights, as well as an elegant ceiling medallion and chandelier and built-in sound system."

Next is a recently renovated ensuite.

"Redone this year, it features heated ceramic tile flooring, a ceramic tile steam shower with tempered glass door and sunken whirlpool bath set in tan ceramic tile beside an opaque, three-piece bay window," he says. "Decorative 'daylight' fluorescent light ceiling panels, maple vanity with granite counter top and ceramic feature wall add to the other features to give it a relaxing, spa-like feel."

Two notable features await upstairs, adds Michie.

"First, one of the bedrooms provides access to a large balcony -- a great spot to have morning coffee. Then, there's a bedroom with a rear wall of six vertical windows that's presently being used as an art studio. Those are two unique -- and enjoyable features. The home also comes with four fireplaces and is filled from top to bottom with gorgeous woodwork."

With a 2,000-sq.-ft. walk-out basement -- which comes with a den, huge games room, kitchenette and all kinds of storage space -- 245 River Rd. is truly an English manor, and more.
