The Dynasty Bathrooms & Kitchen Centre legacy is one built on hard work and handshakes. More than three decades ago, Ken Onsowich began working with clients one-on-one, from his home in East Kildonan. A small operation, he did everything from sourcing quality products, to estimating and installation. In fact, he ran his humble business that way for nearly three years before he opened a showroom — which still exists today — on Logan Avenue.
His resilience, knowledge and the way he approached his customers are values he continues to apply all these years later. "Although we have more paperwork in place, our goal remains the same just as it did all those years ago when dad was just starting out," says Tina Driscoll, Ken Onsowich’s daughter, who manages the business today.
"We remain committed to choosing the best products, doing the best work and standing behind both today," she says. No wonder they still get clients whose parents or grandparents supported them way back when.
"We know our products as well as the manufacturer does," says Driscoll. "And our customers even better. That means that whether it’s a premium line or a brand many know well, it has to stand up to our customers’ expectations."
And so it’s no surprise that staff training is of the utmost importance.
"Whenever we take on a new line, we send someone out to the facility to see how the products are made. To speak with the manufacturers and understand their vision. They tour the facility and have the opportunity to fully experience the line. In fact, in some instances, they also stay in hotels with the bath fixtures installed so they can sink into a tub or have a hot shower at the end of the day for the full customer experience. Then they come home here to Winnipeg and train the rest of us."
"Everyone has different needs. I can spend two hours in a bathtub," she says. "Whereas some of our customers just want to get clean and get out. Just like in the kitchen. Some people love making food and entertaining family and friends for hours. Some kitchens are designed for gathering, some are built to serve large families; others are quaint and functional. Whatever our customers want, we can help."
Driscoll suggests, "Come in with an idea and let us walk you through the showroom where we can discuss the benefits and features of a product or line. Then we can begin to narrow down the search based on functionality and design options. At Dynasty, you can experience every single part of the process."
Whether you want to create your own spa at home or a chef’s kitchen; whether you’re renovating or making selections for a new build, stop by their Lorimer boutique-style showroom, complete with loads of free parking. Sales staff will happily discuss what’s on trend, what colours are available, what finish you like. Together you can envision the project coming together. After all, technology has really changed since the Jacuzzi tub had cornered the bathroom market.
All products come with a warranty and when installed by Dynasty, they include an extended warranty as well.
"Let’s face it, it feels good to buy local," says Driscoll, "You know the money stays in our province to support the economy and keep Manitobans employed – that’s something."
"My dad always said, treat your customers fairly and be available to talk when they need you. It makes a huge difference in the customer experience."
Although Onsowich has no plans of retiring anytime soon, he does say he might continue to dial back his hours. After all, his daughter seems to have everything under control. From the seminars she hosts at the Lorimer location to the local charities she supports, Dynasty Bathrooms & Kitchen Centre is certainly doing something right. This month they will be celebrating 35 years in business.
"It’s nice to be able to do this with my dad, doing what we both love. I feel very fortunate."
