Stay Home!

Words we’ve heard for many months now. Stay home - an urging for us to flatten the curve and hunker down with just our immediate family. For some that’s been the motivation they’ve needed to make improvements, clearing away and rediscovering long tucked away treasures. For others, being homebound has been a blessing; an opportunity to take up gardening or pick up a paint brush. Some people we’ve spoke with have started crafting again or decided to re-stain the fence.

With less people spending money on fuel and time travelling to and from work, some Manitoba businesses, are seeing a boost in sales. For me personally, we have committed to ordering plants from local nurseries. We pick up curbside orders from local butchers and we purchased a new firepit to expand our living space. In the spirit of bringing the lake to our backyard, we keep marshmallows and hot dogs on hand. It has been a real treat and one we’ve enjoyed immensely.

In fact, without social obligations and more imagination, now is a great time to plan a staycation without ever leaving the backyard. Fire up the smoker and pitch a tent. Take your family camping just a few steps off the back deck. Or, if you’re more motivated by adventure, consider investing in a trampoline or building a tree fort. Hang tiny white lights and bird houses from trees. Plant wireless, water resistant speakers around your yard and turn your patio stones into a path.

Last Homes Feature, we encouraged dining on the deck, which is a perfect complement to homemade sangria and roasted veggies you’ve grown yourself.

Garden parties will continue to be something many of us host, especially as the weather heats up. Hot tubs and inground pools are a fabulous way to spend an evening. In fact, whenever I hear the sounds of water splashing from a neighbour’s backyard I smile. Like the way a cocktail made with fresh herbs or the smell of a grill wafts over a fence, the backyard is a perfect canvas for joy.

So gather your tribe, think outside the box you call home, and map out a backyard adventure to remember.

T.S. Eliot said, "Home is where one starts from." So start your adventure today.
