It’s been calculated that when prospective buyers people enter a show home, builders have just seven seconds to make a positive impression.
And while often overlooked in the grand scheme of things, a show home’s foyer provides that all-important first impression. Get it right, and people will want to explore the home further.
Get it wrong, and a bland entrance may serve as a first strike against a home before a buyer advances farther inside.
Sandra Finch of Discovery Homes says there’s no such issue with 28 Berry Hill Rd.
"The home greets you with a warm, covered entry that transitions nicely into a spacious foyer that opens beautifully onto a bright, open great room," she says. "The entrance in this home is extra-special."
The Willow’s foyer is special in two senses. First, it branches off into a functional, tiled hallway to the left that holds a luxurious powder room, handy side entrance with mudroom and the lower-level stairs. Second, a water-vapour fireplace set in a taupe-quartz base beneath a half wall that seemingly hovers above it creates a unique, functional — and very artistic — divider between the foyer and great room.
"Our designers thought this was an option that would appeal to many buyers. Usually, homes have linear electric fireplaces in the family room. This option creates a different visual. Everyone has just loved it."
Finch says the response to the great room’s design has been identical.
"An extra-wide accordion door on the kitchen’s rear wall lets in loads of natural light, making for a light-filled kitchen that features a massive island, 41-inch-high glossy white thermofoil cabinets, quartz waterfall countertops and backsplash and corner pantry. All the colours meld together beautifully."
The adjacent dining area is just as functional as the kitchen, she adds.
"It’s equally suited for cosy family nights or large dinner gatherings. The accordion door also leads out to a big backyard deck that’s perfect for visiting after dinner."
The ultra-navigable area is then completed by a striking, yet functional, family room.
"A huge picture window lets in more natural light, while a simple, cantilevered maple entertainment unit with quartz countertop is a perfect complement to the fireplace. The luxury vinyl plank flooring that runs throughout the great room is not only gorgeous, but also very easy to maintain."
Meanwhile, access to the Willow’s upper level comes via an extra-wide staircase carved neatly into the wall to the left of the expansive foyer.
"It starts off with a loft that’s situated at the top of the stairs three steps down from the bedroom wing. Two large windows — one on the wall next to it, the other over the stairs — fill it with light," she says. "It’s a perfect sitting room or computer area."
The subtly elevated bedroom wing is an efficiently designed area, housing a well-appointed four-piece bath, two oversized secondary bedrooms and a serene, secluded master suite.
"It’s a private retreat that comes complete with a large walk-in closet, ensuite with custom-tiled walk-in shower, glossy white vanity with quartz countertop and dual sinks and vinyl tile floor," Finch says. "It’s a wonderful space in from start to finish."
Finally, there’s the Willow’s 850-sq.-ft. lower level, which is anything but ordinary.
"All that wide-open space is surrounded by four huge windows that transform it into a light-filled, lookout basement," she says. "With a price of $541,800 that includes the lookout basement and over $86,000 in upgrades, you won’t find a home that offers better value in the area."
