It’s no secret large families need a spacious home that’s exceedingly flexible and functional.
That said, they also need a home that possesses a certain flair, an intangible quality that promotes the enjoyment of day-to-day life.
Avanti Custom Homes’ sparkling new 2020 Fall Parade of Homes entry at 7 Creemans Cres. in Charleswood’s RidgeWood West neighbourhood hits the mark in all three areas, says Cheryl Thurston of Realty Executives First Choice, who serves as sales representative for the 2,312 sq. ft., two-storey home along with partner Jon Wiebe.
"When Avanti’s design team set out to design this home, they wanted to do something completely different," she says. "They achieved that goal without sacrificing function or style."
Right from the start, the four-bedroom home features a unique yet highly functional design that originates in its foyer. While generous and welcoming, it doesn’t open directly onto the great room.
Instead, there’s a double coat closet (with eight-foot-high doors that mirror the eight-foot front door) straight ahead and an angled wall to the right. Not only does that angled wall open up space, but it also naturally leads you to a landing area that precedes the great room.
That’s where the home’s flexible, fashionable design starts to take shape.
"There’s a spacious lifestyle room to the right," notes Thurston. "People love its location with it being tucked off to the side and out of the way; it would make a great home office if you have a home-based business. There’s also a powder room across the way to the left, which is perfectly placed for clients or guests to use."
Move ahead a few steps more and there it is, right on cue: a huge, light-filled great room that’s equal parts function and flair.
"It’s a wonderfully-designed space that’s modern and open, yet warm, welcoming and functional," says Wiebe of the main living area, which is divided into halves with the kitchen and dining area to the left and family room to the right. "The amount of natural light that flows into the great room is phenomenal."
There are two reasons the area possesses such an unforced, natural brightness, he adds.
"Because the family room has a high tray ceiling, it was outfitted with floor-to-ceiling windows that allow tons of daylight to enter from the southwest side of the great room. On the southeast side, a spacious dining area surrounded by windows and patio door lets sun flow in from the southeast."
At the same time, warm finishes placed smartly throughout the great room temper its natural brightness, endowing it with a cosy, welcoming ambience.
"Medium-brown, textured laminate plank flooring warms the area up along with finishes like grey quartz countertops and a light grey tile backsplash in the kitchen," says Wiebe, adding that its spacious corner pantry comes with an eight-foot door. "A sand-coloured brick feature wall with fireplace and spot for a TV above adds more texture and warmth to the family room."
Most importantly, the great room is exceptionally user-friendly.
"There’s lots of space to work in the island kitchen, the dining area is expandable and the family room is has the space you need to watch a movie with the family or visit with guests after dinner," says Thurston. "It’s a very versatile area, one that’s a real pleasure to spend time in."
While the home’s main living area is spectacular, its upper level is equally so due to its flat-out functionality. Comprised of six spaces — four bedrooms, a laundry room and main bath — it was designed to offer big families the highest possible degree of function and privacy.
All three kids’ bedrooms are not only huge, but were also set well away from the master suite, much to the delight of parents. And with its window and plenty of space to move about and do laundry, the laundry room is so much more than a laundry closet.
The main bath was also positioned perfectly for kids to use it on school mornings without disturbing mom and dad, says Wiebe.
"They have their own incredible retreat to enjoy," he says. "It starts off with a massive ensuite with tile floor, five-foot walk-in shower with gorgeous tile surround and soaker tub below a big obscured glass window. Next to it is a huge walk-in closet with built-in storage. Then, the bedroom is at the back, isolated beautifully by the ensuite and walk-in closet."
Downstairs, the basement — which is insulated and framed-in for future development — offers over 900 sq. ft. of livable space, adding a third level of function to the impeccably-designed home.
The home also comes with a feature that no other home in the area has, adds Wiebe.
"This is the only home in RidgeWood West that comes with an insulated, drywalled three-car garage with 18-foot-wide door and extra bay with 10-foot ceiling at the rear that’s perfect for housing a boat, quad or third car," he says. "It caps off the home, which is perfect for large families seeking a fantastic location and a luxurious, functional home at a great price.
