Preliminary steps to get your project underway

WINNIPEG FREE PRESS FILES

Whether you’re a do-it-yourselfer or looking for professional help, the Ask a Renovator booth staffed by Manitoba Home Builders’ Association RenoMark renovators at the Winnipeg Renovation Show is the perfect place to start your next project.

The MHBA’s Ask a Renovator booth is a signature feature of this weekend’s 2025 Winnipeg Renovation Show taking place at the RBC Convention Centre from Jan. 10-12.

The MHBA Ask a Renovator booth is staffed by professional Manitoba Home Builders’ Association renovator members who are available to answer your questions about an upgrade or renovation project you may be planning or even just dreaming about. These professional renovators can provide you with a free 15-minute consultation to help steer you in the right direction toward a new project for your home.

Before heading to the Winnipeg Renovation Show to talk to the experts, the MHBA has some tips that will help you get your project planning underway.

Know why you want to renovate

What problems are you trying to solve? What is the purpose of your renovation? Having an idea of what you’re hoping to achieve with the project will help you get started and focus the scope of work your project will tackle.

Have a clear plan

Make sure to have a clear focus on what must be included in your project, as well as any other work you might like to include, if your budget allows. Which facets of the renovation are must-haves, and which would be nice to get done, but may not be essential?

Give yourself time

The demand for professional renovators has never been higher. Many contractors are booking months ahead for projects they are taking on. If you have a significant renovation project you are planning, give yourself time to properly plan it and hire the right contractor for the job.

Get a written contract

When you make your decision to hire a professional renovator, get it in writing. Avoid renovators who offer to do work without a contract. This type of renovator may not be paying for provincial worker’s compensation coverage or carrying adequate insurance, leaving you at financial risk. MHBA renovator members always provide a written contract for their projects.

Set a realistic budget

Decide as early as possible how much you want to spend. Speak to your lender and discuss the amount you can reasonably afford and the most suitable financing options. Remember — your budget should cover everything that may arise from the renovation, such as draperies, blinds, furniture and appliances.

Building permits

Generally, a building permit is required for any renovations that involve changes to the structure or systems of your home. Ensure your renovator includes all required permits as part of your agreement.

Energy efficiency

Renovations offer opportunities to make your home healthier and more energy-efficient. Consider these options during the the planning process. Efficiency Manitoba is a great resource for homeowners looking to make their dwelling much more energy efficient.
