New Homes

Warm and inviting

Home’s country charm enhanced by plenty of modern touches

The 2,230-sq.-ft., two-storey home starts with a fetching exterior that deftly balances rustic and modern design elements.

An open-riser staircase greets you the moment you step into the wide, tiled foyer, which is flanked by a mudroom to the right and powder room to the left.

Positioned well away from the kids’ bedrooms, the primary bedroom is a sensationally secluded — and well-appointed — sanctuary.

The versatile, well-positioned second floor loft can be used as an office, play space ormedia area.

The bright, voluminous family room — centred around a simple yet stunning entertainment unit with 100-inch electric fireplace — is a spectacular space.

Anchored by a nine-foot island, fashion meets function in the beautifully-finished chef’s kitchen in Artista Homes’ two-storey show home in Oak Bluff West.

Ask any builder about constructing a show home in a countrified community, and they will tell you it’s fraught with challenges.

First — from a stylistic standpoint — there’s an obligation to build in design features that give a subtle nod to the home’s rustic surroundings.

Then, from a practical standpoint, the home must possess the modern functionality active families demand.

Consequently, a builder can’t just wave a magic want to create a country-modern classic out of thin air.

That said, the design team at Artista Homes has conjured up a gem in the form of a 2,230-sq.-ft., two-storey show home at 11 Stone Hearth Lane in Oak Bluff West, says Artista new homes sales representative Savanna Neustaedter.

“Even though it’s a large home, it’s very warm and inviting,” she says. “Its modern styling is complemented beautifully by several well-placed rustic touches.”

Quite appropriately, those rustic touches start outside with an exterior that features stone trim, warm splashes of siding and a covered front porch with front door bordered by warm wood-style trim.

The modern-rustic porch then leads inside to a thoroughly modern foyer: wide, tiled, and flanked left and right by a powder room and mudroom, respectively.

Neustaedter says the mudroom has gone over well with families.

“It’s been a huge hit. Families love its function with all its storage space, a locker-style area with coat hooks and the separate main-floor laundry area at the end. It gets the home off to a very functional start.”

Next comes a welcome touch of flair, as an open riser staircase directly across from the mudroom (which, incidentally, can be closed off by a sliding barn door) starts off the main living area in refined country-modern style.

“It’s simply gorgeous with its dark spindles and railing and natural oak stairs,” she says. “It’s perfectly placed, and the spindles and open stairs allow light to flow into the foyer from the big windows on the family room’s rear wall.”

Meander into the main living area, and you find an exceptionally functional space that possesses two personalities: a modern, dramatic family room and a country-modern kitchen that’s equal parts style and function.

“The family room is amazing with its 18-foot ceiling, floor-to-ceiling windows and entertainment unit with grey feature wall and 100-inch electric fireplace with a gorgeous black micro-cement surround,” Neustaedter says. “The windows let in an ample amount of natural light, while warm brown/grey engineered oak hardwoods add warmth and texture.”

Meanwhile, the adjacent kitchen makes its own fashion statement with a country-cool combination of two-tone cabinetry, grey quartz countertops with a matte suede finish, white-tile backsplash, stainless appliances and a nine-foot island that seats three.

“A generous dining area with a large window behind it is just steps from the kitchen, making it perfect for entertaining,” she adds. “And there’s a main-floor flex space to the right of the kitchen that can be used as an office, playroom or bedroom.”

Take the stunning open-riser staircase upstairs and you’re greeted immediately by a large loft.

“It’s a great use of space. It can be used as either an office or as a media or study area for the kids — whatever works best for your family.”

Move forward from the loft, and you find the upper-level layout was expressly designed to provide the functionality families require on chaotic weekdays mornings.

A bedroom wing containing two huge bedrooms and a four-piece bath is the kids’ domain, while a privately positioned primary bedroom provides parents with the amenities they’ll need to get ready for a challenging workday.

“They’ll love the ensuite with its signature soaker tub, gorgeous hardwood-look tile floor and walk-in shower with frameless glass enclosure and stunning tile surround,” Neustaedter says. “It also comes with a large walk-in closet with custom shelving.”

She says the award-winning home has hit all the right notes with families.

“Everyone has loved the home — it’s been the talk of the street. It offers a perfect balance of flair and function that gives families everything they need in a home, including a big basement with wood structural floor, tons of windows and a nine-foot ceiling.”
