What makes a great community?

"A community is not defined by the physical boundaries that separate one place from another, but rather is a place where people engage with and look out for one another, where it's easy to get around, it's safe, and children can easily walk to school or the local community centre," says David Palubeski, Chief Planner with Winnipeg's Lombard North consulting group and a Director of the Canadian Institute of Planners.

"It's where green spaces are interconnected with neighbourhoods and room is made for nature as part of the design."

Lombard North is applying those values to the design of Tourond Creek, a unique alternative to big-city living located in a great community, St. Adolphe.

Tourond Creek will be transformative in nature, defined by its walkable neighbourhoods, interconnected with natural areas, a recreation centre, arena, curling rink, dual-track elementary school and Main Street revitalization, anchored by the planned Village Centre designed to provide easy access to grocery shopping, restaurants, day care, medical offices, coffee shops, convenience stores and services.

Protection of natural areas is important in St. Adolphe, which is bordered by two expansive green spaces. On the eastern edge of the village, the 110-acre Tourond Creek ecological reserve follows the meandering path of the creek. To the west, St. Adolphe Park on the east bank of the Red River is home to the village's original ferry landing interpretive site.

Tourond Creek has been designed around people's needs, Mayor Jackie Hunt states.

"Our Community Plan will guide the development of Tourond Creek and St. Adolphe into one of the Winnipeg region's great places to live. The building blocks have been set as first phase servicing of Tourond Creek is nearly complete, with building permits available October 2016."

Just a 10-minute drive south of Winnipeg on St. Mary's Road or Highway 75, St. Adolphe offers all the benefits of a large city, but with a more simplified lifestyle, a safe and friendly environment, and ample connections to nature. Tourond Creek is close to what matters!

Take 10 minutes to visit the community — it may be a drive that changes your life!
