Add spices after cooking to give fries extra flavour

Bob Fila / Chicago Tribune files

For crispy French fries make sure the oven is hot and flip them at least once halfway through baking time.

QUESTION: I bake French fries from frozen or freshly cut potatoes in my oven. Is it better to add the seasonings such as salt or pepper to the potatoes before putting them in the oven or after? What can I do to ensure crunchy French fries?— Tara

Answer: While both techniques work, many restaurants such as McDonalds add salt/pepper at the end of cooking to retain flavour and a crunchy bite.

For an interesting twist, sprinkle with Italian seasoning, garlic powder or paprika, chili or onion powder and a sprinkle of vegetable, canola or olive oil before baking.

Make sure that the oven is hot (450 degrees) so that French fries finish crispy. Flip them at least once halfway through baking time.

Question: I have a memory foam mattress and, unfortunately, did not put a mattress cover on it, so I have a couple of little stains. What can I use to remove the stains? — Sharon

Answer: It would depend on what caused the stains, but for grease and perspiration marks, start by scrubbing it with clear dish soap and plain old water. Rinse with water.

Question: What is the best way to set colours and prevent bleeding of patterns in heavyweight 100 per cent cotton? The fabric has never been washed. — Joanne

Answer: Soak the cotton for a few hours in white vinegar. Next, wash it in the hottest water possible (you can use cold water, but the colour setting process will take longer).

Question: I was steaming vegetables and forgot about them. The water went dry and burnt my pot. Any solution?— Simone

Answer: Soak the pot with dishwasher detergent and hot water for a couple of hours, scrub with a steel wool pad.

Or (and this is what I like to do) into your pot pour baking soda, dish soap and enough water to cover the bottom. Boil the contents for five minutes. Let sit just until cool enough to handle and scrub with an S.O.S pad.

Some people use oven cleaner for this purpose and leave it overnight, but I prefer baking soda.
