An easy recipe worth remembering for cleaner showers

Gord King / Ottawa Citizen Files

Jet Dry dishwasher rinse, rubbing alcohol, dish soap, water and hydrogen peroxide can be combined and applied as a shower cleaner.

Question: My mom once used a recipe of yours to clean her shower, and it worked wonders. Unfortunately, she misplaced the recipe. It was a shower cleaner that she sprayed on and left on and it cleaned well. Can you send me that recipe by chance?

— Thank you! Tracy

Answer: Into a spray bottle, combine: one tablespoon of Jet Dry dishwasher rinse, one quarter cup of rubbing alcohol, half a teaspoon of dish soap, two cups of water and half a cup of three per cent hydrogen peroxide. Spray the shower and leave it — no need to wipe or rinse. Apply once a week or more.

Question: I have a dark, real-wood coffee table. A hot plate was placed on it and now there’s a white spot. Can you please tell me what to do?

— Valerie

Answer: The first and easiest solution is to apply mayonnaise or non-gel, non-bleach toothpaste to the wood. Leave it for 30 minutes and wipe. If the stain remains, cover the mark with a white cloth. Using the steam setting on your clothing iron, wave the iron overtop of the cloth-making sure that you do not set the iron on one area. With a little patience, the mark will disappear.

Question: I am wondering how to remove name labels from clothes stuck on at a personal-care home.

— Betty

Answer: Begin by lifting a corner and heating it with a hair dryer. Often, this is all that is required to soften the glue, allowing the label to peel off. Other options are Goo Gone, WD-40 or rubbing alcohol.

Question: I’m looking for a kitchen cupboard cleaner to remove grease, etc., that my regular cleaner won’t remove. Any suggestions would help.

— Thanks, Tina

Answer: When cleaning your kitchen drawers and cupboards, use regular dish soap and water. To remove black marks from grease and grime, use a little Bar Keepers Friend on a damp cloth. Test on an inconspicuous area first — you will be surprised.
