WHAT constitutes an accessory? When we think of accessories we picture items like toss cushions, bric-a-brac and wall art. These items are all great additions to most rooms but in order to create a truly unique space you have to think outside of the box. A truly interesting space incorporates unusual touches that speak to the homeowner's interests.
Our feature photograph is a great example of how to create an awesome space with little effort. The painted bead board walls enhance the rustic charm of the room. The accessories, however, are what make this room truly unique. Equestrian paraphernalia is used here to create a space that is out of the ordinary but enticing just the same. So for the horse lover the very items you use for your hobby can become interesting accessories for your home. For the horse-rider wannabes these items bring in a sense of the hobby without all of the bruises.
In our photo, the saddle set on a wooden bench along with two bits and reels of rope create a nice vignette under the large window. Two bronze horse-head plaques set casually on the window sill rather than hung on the wall generate more visual appeal. On the lovely vanity sits a tin of saddle oil and a horse brush.
The mirror reflects riding ribbons, which are hung on the opposite wall. The two sconces mimic chunky candles, which supports the rustic theme of the space. Simple pussy willow stalks in a ceramic vase give the area dramatic height. The riding boots are the finishing touch. Any one of the riding items on its own would not normally be thought of as accessory, but in the right setting can become an awesome accoutrement.
The barn-red wall is a surprise but adds tons of character to the mostly ebony and white scheme. The large window is a dramatic feature of this room and could be mimicked with a wall of pictures in similar frames in the same configuration as the window panes. Perhaps even pictures that when put together on the wall create one large image. The trick is to make the collection as large as the window pictured here. This is what creates impact and drama.
Not a horse person? No sweat. Any hobby or interest can work in a similar fashion. If you read this column regularly you know that I love to fish. So, at our cottage I've created window treatments using fishing rods, netting and lures. I've also use a fishing pole to hang our Canada flag outside. Vintage lures dot the cabin as do various sea- inspired accessories like boat shelves, boat oars and even wind chimes fashioned from old lures.
A person who is into fashion, current or vintage, can use decorative hats, handbags and even shoes as room accessories. Along with these items one could frame vintage fashion magazine or catalogue pages. A dressing dummy would be a nice touch if you can find one. Those who are into creating their own fashions might use items like vintage cloth measuring tapes, old wooden ironing boards and antique clothes irons as room accessories.
If you are an avid reader, use large hardcover books in stacks as side tables or as a base for a coffee table. Continue the 'word' theme by using actual words as accessories. Vintage spectacles, an old typewriter and antique reading lamps will help set the tone for a great library or den.
Those who dream of exploring can create a great room by using everyday items as accessories. Decoupage old world maps onto table tops or lamp shades and don't forget to include a classic world globe in the room. A large magnifying glass set on a desk with a pair of binoculars or a field telescope will set the mood for the world traveller. Old or new atlases and books on travel can sit on tabletops to support the theme. Frame air or ship tickets from places you've been. You can age them by brushing them with an aging product if desired. Use colourful sections of a world map as the background and place the tickets on top of it. Even odd coins can be framed to add to the collection.
Car buffs can use items right off of the car as cool accessories. Install side or rear view mirrors onto the wall to use as shaving or makeup mirrors in the bathroom. Sparkling hubcaps can be hung as decorative art. Other car items like vintage interior door handles might be fashioned into decorative hooks for robes or towels. Old licence plates, vintage (clean) gas cans and so on are great accessories for a car-themed room.
By now you've got the idea that just about any item can be used as an accessory in the right situation.
Enjoy the path less taken and you may just come up with unique accessories of your own.
