Even the tiniest of spaces can become dazzling features in your home. This Kohler bathroom shows how even a little nook can be utilized to provide huge impact.
The Old Hollywood-inspired vanity alcove is a wonderful over-the-top feature in this luxurious bathroom. Although it was part of the original room design in this case, that doesn't mean that a bedroom closet or other unused space couldn't offer the same appeal for you in your home. Before we look at the possibilities for your home, let's look at the fabulous details of the design elements in our feature photograph.
The ultra-feminine vanity area mimics the glamorous features of 1940s Hollywood. The reflective surfaces, ornate mirrors and silver finishes all speak to that decadent era. Although somewhat kitschy, the design elements work because they are maintained in the vanity area. The rest of the room is elegant but not as flashy, so the feature area really works. It's just enough glam to be indulgent, but not so much that it's garish.
The inlaid tile motif in the vanity nook further supports the unique attributes of this special space. Good lighting makes this feature stand out and also provides necessary task lighting needed for the functionality of the space. The pink Kohler sink is a quirky but effective choice for this feminine bathroom. The unusual shape and colour of the basin provide a sense of whimsy to this fantasy space.
Keeping these features in mind, let's look at what can be done in your home.
You may be able to create a mini-fantasy or functional space in your own home with a little imagination and time. First, ask yourself what you could or would use a small space like this for. You may long for a hobby area, home office space, vanity or dressing area (as in our photograph), a writing desk/area in which to draft your next big novel, and so on.
Once you have the idea in hand, you can start your search for a useful space in your home on which to create your mini-dream space.
Depending upon your specific needs for your specific mini-space, you may be able to create your small dream area in a bedroom closet, attic area or possibly even under a closed-in stairway. Most homes have some kind of unused void spaces if you look hard enough. You may have to do some digging, as it were, but it might be worth the effort, especially if space is at a premium in your home.
For example, we removed the panelled wall that closed in our rec-room stairway and were able to create a small sitting area under the actual stairwell in which to do crafts. Many homes built in the 1990s have a built-in china hutch alcove in the dining room. Many of you don't have a china hutch and the space sits there unused and unusual. Mirror the entire back of the alcove, install shelves and it can be a built-in china cubby, library or unique display for collectibles.
Even a corner of a bedroom can be set aside as a special space in which to create a dressing table/area, writing spot or what have you. Keep an open mind. If you want it badly enough, you'll find space somewhere.
Besides the integral element of safe wiring in your mini-space, you'll want to incorporate some of the design elements that were utilized in our feature vanity area. Proper lighting for the task at hand is a must. Whether you'll be writing that novel or creating handicrafts, proper task lighting will keep the area bright and will prevent eye strain.
A good sitting chair and sturdy work table or desk is your next consideration. You need to find furniture that fits a tiny space but that is comfy and ergonomic.
Our feature space utilized what looks like the base of an antique dresser and had a custom marble top made to fit the circular space. The furniture was then painted in a silver finish that suited that particular décor. You may be able to MacGyver your own furniture or a flea-market treasure in a similar way.
If you want your space to include a little fantasy, finish the walls in an interesting way. Bold paint colour, a textured finish or even colourful fabric can be used to make the area colourful and fun. If the space is somewhat gloomy or visually cramped, include a large mirror or a wall of mirror to visually expand the space.
In some situations, the flooring may not be finished (as in under a closed-in stairway). In this case, you can use this negative to your advantage by installing a sumptuous section of carpet, marble flooring or whatever your heart desires. In such a small floor space you can splurge on flooring.
Little spaces can become big assets if you have the gumption and time to maximize them.
