DEAR Debbie: We are planning to redecorate the main floor of our home and would like to make a change to a more modern style. DEAR Christy and Will: There is lots of talk about the exciting colour trends for 2010. As we turn the page on a new decade, we are looking for a change that will define the next ten years. Condoning a healthy lifestyle, reducing stress, and revering and protecting the environment are pervasive themes that have taken root and will branch out into every area of manufacturing, decorating and design. To update a decorating scheme, you only have to change the paint on the walls. Here are some of the most popular colours and textures that are going to be with us for awhile.
The spotlight is on water, the life force that is valued over all else. Watery shades of blues, and washed surfaces relate directly to a serene atmosphere. We find comfort in bleached textures, weathered wood, and blended shades of colour. In the modern home shown here, walls are painted a calm Zen blue, the trim, mouldings and baseboards are crisp white. The dining table is light oak and the sofa and chair fabrics in the lounge are warm beige. In contrast, the floor is a dark wood laminate but with enough grain to keep it lightweight. This uplifting decor combines simple features, the textured storage containers in the hall, a plush carpet, and matte surfaces to develop a light-hearted, modern mood. DEAR Debbie: The staircase and baseboards in my house are light oak. I would like to install hardwood floors but I don't want to have light oak floors. What would you recommend? Asha
DEAR Asha: Even though lighter woods are on trend at the moment, if you really want dark hardwood floors, which I personally prefer, I would paint the light oak white, install the dark hardwood of your choice, and put a sisal runner down the middle of the stairs. You can also mix and match as I have done in the room shown here. The dark floor and light wood furniture work well together in a modern setting.
