WALL sconces have been around for centuries, first lighting up drafty castles with smoky candles. These modern interpretations exude a certain comfort, delivering light, and sometimes standing alone as a wee bit of art. The word, sconce, derives from the Latin absconsus and the French esconce, offering up many meanings, most notably signifying an object that is covered or protected.

1. Shady class

This shimmering chrome sconce is contemporary, yet classic. Use it in a bedroom to dress up a nightstand, while offering the ideal light for reading. The white-string shade offers a bit of glitter, while a pair of crystal beads add a hint of flair. Made by Debbie Travis, it measures 17.8 by 35.6 by 30.5 centimetres, and sells for $59.99 at Canadian Tire stores.

2. Flame for thought

Add a colourful, candlelit focal point to the kitchen and cook in old-world ambience. Tuscany might just come calling after lighting the five-votive metal plate sconce. It's hand painted and measures 16 by seven by 97 centimetres. It works great with both votives or tealight candles (hint: tealights are tidier). Pick it up for $38 at Pier One Imports. Tealight candles are $12 a package.

3. Classic vanity

Leave it to Martha Stewart to come through with a little bit of retro and a little bit of contemporary. With its clever reversible design and ample wattage, this sconce is the perfect fit for freshening up in the bathroom. Measuring 53 by 22 by 27 centimetres, the shiny sconce sells for $79.99 at Home Depot stores.

4. Chic shimmer

Who needs a disco ball? Guests will be talking about this dazzling Eurochrome gem as its dangling jewels reflect the light. A snazzy choice for the contemporary dining room, it measures 36 by 27 by 19 centimetres and costs $119.95 at Linen Chest (online).

5. Simply organic

Intertwining glass flowers and leaves in a muted gold-brown finish give this sconce a nature-inspired touch. The two-light sconce, which measures 29 by 34 centimetres will fit into most colour schemes. Buy it at Home Depot stores for $34.99.

6. Scroll power

For an instant wow factor, hang this unique iron and seashell scroll disc alongside your favourite work of art. It's crafted of bronze-finished wrought iron. Scoop it up for $35. To top off the look, indulge in the rich colour and aroma of a scented candle like this golden apple orchard scented choice, which stands 10 centimetres high ($10). Both are available at Pier One Imports stores.

7. Age of romance

No need to light a single match to set a soft candle effect in the evening. This antique style sconce, with its aged iron finish and crystals is reminiscent of grand balls and chandeliers in the Victorian age. Made by Hampton Bay, it measures 30 centimetres by 31 centimetres, and is available at Home Depot stores for $54.98.
