Feed those leftover egg yolks to the birds

Fried egg yolk

Question: I enjoy cooking pancakes from scratch everyday, but don’t want to use the egg yolks as they are high in cholesterol. I hate the thought of wasting half an egg by throwing the yolk in the garbage. What can I do with the egg yolk besides throwing it out?

Candice

Answer: Leftover egg yolks may be refrigerated for three to four days, you can also freeze them. To use, thaw in refrigerator and then mix well. They will keep in the freezer for up to three months. Use egg yolks to add to meatloaf or homemade mayonnaise, custard or pudding.

If you would rather not eat egg yolks, you can use them in homemade hair conditioners because of their ability to improve the softness of hair and to reduce the occurrence of frizz. Many people also use egg yolk hair conditioners to reduce hair loss. Egg yolks contain vitamin A, which is used in many skin-care products designed to target acne. To use egg yolks as a mask, simply break up the yolks with a fork and spread them over your face and neck. Leave to dry and then rinse off with cool water.

Or feed egg yolks to your outdoor friends, simply boil them in water and throw them outside for birds, squirrels and chipmunks, or mix yolks with nuts or berries and zap them in the microwave for a few seconds before tossing them out the door.

Question: I have laminate flooring in my kitchen and my kitchen chairs have rollers on the bottom of them. Where the chairs have been used (the most) they have turned the floor area a really light color. I don’t know if the area is ruined, so I thought I’d see if you had any solutions as to what to use to bring back the colour. If you have any ideas, I would be most appreciative to hear them.

Judy

Answer: Laminate flooring looks like wood because it is a photographic image of wood; it is then covered by a clear protective finish. In your case, the top layer is damaged by constant abrasion to the surface. If the challenge was that your flooring was scratched, you could repair it with a wax crayon designed to cover small imperfections in laminate flooring.

However, since the flooring has actually lost its colour, you will need to replace the floor plank in order for the floor to look nice again. Fortunately, this is achievable as long as you can colour match your floor.

Smart Tips of the Week:

When I clean my kitchen, I never use paper towels as I feel this is a waste of paper; instead I use tea towels and then throw them in the wash. One of my tea towels is an old linen one from my mother. I wipe down my stainless-steel appliances with a dishcloth in a mild solution of hot water and liquid dish soap. I then use the linen tea towel to dry. I never have streaks and never have to re-wipe to remove smears. It works beautifully on my black stove-top (I would never advise anyone to purchase a black stove-top as everything shows, including dust). I also do the same with my granite counter top. It is a very simple, economic and time-saving way to clean. I know linen items are difficult to find these days, but if people check out thrift shops, they should be able to find some that have been discarded by others, not realizing how useful they are.

When frying or baking bacon, be careful not to stretch the bacon as you place it on the pan. Stretching bacon causes it to shrink during cooking.
