Step 1: Decide on your garage's purpose. Is it workspace, storage, a gym or vehicle storage or a combination?
Step 2: Set a cleaning deadline. Then empty everything out of the space, into separate piles (Keep, Recycle, Garbage, Donate, Hazardous Waste Drop-off).
Step 3: Sort your "Keep" items into categories such as winter-summer sports, garden, tools, recreation and seasonal.
Step 4: Sweep and then wash the floors, removing any oil stains using a degreasing agent (ensure runoff does not enter the storm sewer system). Clean all dirt and cobwebs from lights, ceilings, windows and doors. If the walls need a fresh coat of paint (or, in fact, insulation, vapour barrier and drywall...), now is a great time to do it.
Step 5: Enlist the help of a professional garage designer-organizer to help store you use the space most effectively.
