Kitchen updates don’t have to cost a fortune

KOHLER CANADA/Painting dated cabinets can transform your kitchen.

KITCHEN renovations are one of the most expensive updates to make. If your cabinets are in good shape, you can probably get away with a mini makeover rather than a full-blown reno.

If you’re dealing with dated wood cabinets that are otherwise sufficient it’s a good idea to consider painting them out in a contemporary colour. This is an affordable option that will bring your tired kitchen into the present. Our feature photo shows painted cabinets in a soft coastal colour that is both charming and current. The muted tone of the cabinets provides a soft, casual look. If you prefer more drama consider a contemporary two-toned palette for upper and lower cabinets. Darker cabinets below and light cabinets above can be a dramatic look, especially if you have black appliances.

The bead board backsplash in our photo is a great option if you don’t have the budget for more costly products but a tiled backsplash is also a great way to give your kitchen an entirely new look if you have the budget and skill to install tiles. There are many DIY products available that make tiling an easier prospect than it used to be.

If tiling is not for you then consider painting a faux tile backsplash using simple interior latex paint. This is a fun project that can be painted out down the road if desired. If your cabinets are plain with no detail consider installing trim panels on the doors and drawer fronts before you paint. You may remember I had done this in our former home and the outcome was quite lovely. This is a time-consuming project but take it one door at a time and you’ll get through it. Working in small batches is also less disruptive to daily kitchen use.

A new countertop, sink and taps are fairly affordable updates that can transform a dated kitchen into a lovely space. The gorgeous Kohler apron sink and faucet set work perfectly in this country-inspired kitchen and are just one example of the many options available.

Countertops come in a range of products and prices so you’re sure to find something that will fit your budget and tastes. Personally, I prefer not to use natural stone, such as granite, as it is not a renewable product. We went with a simple charcoal-coloured laminate countertop in our condo and it’s just perfect for our needs and was easier to install and way more affordable than stone products are.

Updating cabinet hardware is another option that is affordable and DIY. Look for sales on discontinued items or mix and match upper and lowers for a budget-conscious update.

Be sure to measure the old hardware so you purchase the right size. This will save you drilling new holes and patching old holes. If you’re not sure, take a sample of the hardware with you for store assistance.

You can paint your existing hardware with a metal spray paint. Remove all of the hardware, clean it well and use paint as directed. A matte black over a dated copper finish can make a world of difference in bringing the kitchen up to date.

Install a hanging pot rack to give your kitchen a chef’s look. This will also free up cupboard space. Store utensils on a hanging rod or in a decorative countertop container rather than jamming them into a drawer. They’ll be within easy reach and your drawers will be more organized. A colorful kitchen throw rug can add pattern and a pop of colour to your kitchen. Be sure it’s non-slip. Take your colour cue from the rug and bring in coordinating accessories and artwork. Old lighting fixtures really date a room. Replace them with new ones that will give your kitchen instant style. Purchase new linens for an eat-in kitchen table and chairs. Bring in fun colours that will brighten your kitchen and your day.

New oven mitts, tea towels and hand towels are a must.

If you have the space and have always wanted an island but can’t afford one, use an old wooden table (or similar piece of furniture) as your kitchen island. Paint it out in a shabby chic white or paint it to match your freshly painted cabinetry. Put it on locking casters so you can move it at will. This will also give the table more height, which might be necessary if it’s used as a work surface. Even a small table can make a big difference so look around and see what you can find.

If not a table, perhaps you have room for a breakfast bar along one wall. A length of quality wood shelving set on decorative brackets can work well as a breakfast bar. Put it at a height to allow for stools to tuck beneath the shelf.

Hang a rectangular mirror on the wall in front of the bar for added dimension. You spend a lot of time in the kitchen so make it a great place to be.
