Merging indoors and outdoors tops 2014 trends

Postmedia/Weather resistant fabrics like the Sunbrella material covering this sofa and chair means outdoor living can involve furniture that’s as comfortable as the pieces we have inside the house.

At the beginning of the year, Elle Decor, unveiled its hot trends for 2014. Have you implemented any of these yet?

1. Bejewelled kitchens: Embrace gemstone-coloured cabinetry (think teal and ruby) with brass backsplashes and matching hardware (see designer Miles Redd).

2. Honey-tone woods: Wenge and other gloomy lumber is out and Californian lightness on furniture and floors is in.

3. Saturated turquoise: Tastemakers say it's the must-have hue for fabrics and walls.

4. Hair-on-hide furniture: Ciao cowhide rugs, hello ottomans that sport long and short hair.

5. The merging of indoors and outdoors: Chairs and tables are being fashioned to feel at home inside or by the deck. In support, Sunbrella and other makers of durable fabric are creating more exciting options.
