Green is a wonderful and popular decor colour. From shades of pea soup to kiwi fruit, green is the colour most found in nature. Think of tropical destinations with lush forests and you’ll be transported to a Zen place.
This earthy colour symbolizes spring, growth, renewal and wealth. These are some of the reasons why it is a "feel good" colour for the decor.
Cool colours, such as Soft Sage (10GY 58/105 G49) green by CIL paint, featured in this bedroom photo, make even the smallest space feel open and airy. This restful hue calms the mind and the soul.
In general, green is comforting and soothing, but used in its more vibrant form, such as lime or neon green, it can also be lively and vigorous, infusing a splash of attitude into your space. There is something for everyone in the green realm. Soft apple green can work wonders to cheer up the kitchen, especially when accented with vibrant pops of orange or bright yellow. This colour could also work well in a bedroom when paired with pastel mauve, which would provide a soothing palette. In a child’s room, incorporate punches of vivid green in accessories for a whimsical, exciting space.
Consider painting cabinets in green. We did this at our cottage and absolutely love the hunter-green cupboards. It definitely beats the 1970s faux wood grain they used to be. I also painted a large, freestanding cupboard in the same green to co-ordinate with the kitchen. It’s a lovely, woodsy colour to have at the lake. Green is a popular colour for casual wood furniture as well. Dining suites in green and wood tones are still popular in today’s market. Consider updating your old wooden pieces with green paint to give them new life. A dresser, small accent table or buffet painted in a fresh shade of green can make them relevant once more.
Accent colours
Green can be paired with many other colours on the colour wheel. As shown in our feature photo, pair green with accents in mauve or violet. Black and white are basic accents that work with just about any hue of green. Because green is made from yellow and blue, either of these colours can work as an accent colour in a green decor. Keep the hues similar for consistency when painting accent walls. If you go for a lighter shade of green on the walls, like apple green mentioned above, then a pale yellow or pale blue accent colour would be a good option for a co-ordinating colour palette, versus a dark navy blue or citrus yellow. A pale yellow ceiling might be a nice option in this case.
Accents
One easy way to get some green into your decor is through the incorporation of houseplants. Plants provide texture, colour and sometimes scent. Whether real or not, houseplants add life to the home. Plant a small windowsill herb garden in the kitchen, which will not only be pretty, but also useful. Add in some lucky bamboo shoots, which are easy to maintain and sculptural in design. If you don’t have a green thumb, then consider including botanical artwork, fabric or wallpaper into your space. Today’s greens are fresh and youthful. The jewel tones of the past are making way for shades of celery, light avocado and pistachio.
Vintage green from the 1950s, is making a comeback in appliances, cookware and kitchen cabinetry. This paler turquoise green can be a wonderful and inspirational addition to the decor. Along with the vintage colour, people are collecting vintage dishware such as green jadeite to accent their vintage kitchens.
Flooring
Consider painting a wooden floor, perhaps in a porch or sunroom, green. If not paint, then perhaps green floor tile or vinyl. Green flooring can be very attractive in the right setting and in the right shade of green. Green backsplash tiles are another decorative way to incorporate green into the decor. Whether in the kitchen or the bathroom, the right tile can make a space. Consider bordering it with black or white/cream tiles as an accent to make the entire feature pop.
