Think of it as the door to the inner you

Canwest News Service/Venetian bronze finishes suggest nostalgic, dependable owners.
Canwest News Service/Handles are dignified without being showy.

They're a minute detail in the style of most homes, yet these door accessories speak volumes about life beyond the threshold.

The style, colour and texture of the handle set, doorknob, kickplate, hinges and house numbers can disclose whether those living on the other side are nostalgic, naive or entrepreneurial, as well as their taste in food, the genre of music they appreciate and where they vacation.

Without question, the look of a front door has a connection to what is inside the home, says Adam Findlay, assistant marketing manager for Weiser Lock.

"A door and what's on and around it sets the tone for what is on the other side," adds design consultant Diana West. "A nice entrance leads one to believe the interior of the home is well cared for and vice versa, if the door is not attractive."

So, what do your door accessories say about you?

Knobs and other items with a Venetian bronze finish indicate someone is nostalgic, conscientious, dependable, steady and conservative, with an appreciation for classical music, fine dining and designer clothes, says Findlay.

A satin, stainless steel finish, on the other hand, reveals a person who likes clean, polished and modern looks and, most likely, a home that is simple, bright and airy, he adds.

If you prefer hardware with a heavier appearance and ornate ribbing and fluting, you likely spend time hunting for antiques for your stately home and have a house well stocked with knick-knacks and keepsakes, says Jim Kelley, a pro desk representative at Home Depot.

"You like items with a bit of history to them, versus those with clean and sleek lines."

Those who favour a suburban house to a modern mansion and who have good business sense but tend to work too many hours are likely to opt for a rustic pewter finish, says Findlay.

Is a black iron finish your thing?

If so, you're in the market for a dignified and impressive look, without being showy, says Findlay.

If you favour bright brass with yellow undertones that represent happiness and imagination, you have a sunny personality and a strong sense of humour. Your hobbies include visiting glitzy Las Vegas, wearing bright clothing and listening to pop music, he says.

Homeowners who take pride in the look of their front doors recognize that their home's entrance is where first impressions are made, says Findlay.

They're often willing to spend big bucks to get the look they want, coupled with the added security and durability that pricier grip sets provide.

"There is only one chance to make a first impression and often that impression is made by the door people see when they walk up your path," he says, noting that homeowners with a flair for design often spend more time and money on a front door handle than on the rest of the handles in their home combined.
