Warm colours keep spirits up throughout winter

Beauti-tone Paints Simon Changs colour palette is warm and soothing for the fall and winter seasons.

Beauti-Tone, a division of Home Hardware, along with noted Canadian fashion designer and style expert Simon Chang, are inspiring Canadians to make the most of November by using beautiful colour to create indoor spaces that help us re-energize and stay positive until we can throw open our doors and windows once again in the spring.

"Just as in nature, when trees shake off their leaves and animals seek out a cosy place to hibernate, November is the month when many Canadians go into cocooning mode," says Bev Bell, creative director with Home Hardware's Beauti-Tone paint and home-products division. "It's the perfect month to make our home a beautiful place of calming colours to help us rest and rejuvenate."

For many of us, our favourite thing about autumn is wrapping ourselves up in earthy coloured fashions, cosy throws and luxurious fabrics.

The same feeling translates to our home. Simon Chang, through his Simon Chang Model Home Trend Colour Collection from Beauti-Tone, has selected a palette of colours for the home that are grounded in nature and perfect to wrap ourselves up in over the colder months. "Botanic Beauti, as seen in this living room accent wall, is a beautiful botanical green that makes you think of the outdoors, and a time when everything will be alive again," says Chang.

This rich green tone has depth that attracts the eye in an unassuming way. It's a strong colour best used on accent walls, such as the fireplace wall in this living room.

When carried to the ceiling, it creates drama through height as well as colour.

This green is a statement colour that is trendy, stylish and at the same time comforting.

November is also a great time to have some fun with adding colour to unexpected places, adds Bell.

"I painted the underside of my dining-room table and added a fun message for my grandchildren, who gravitate to the space during family dinners." Bell also encourages us to use colours we love in places just for us, such as the inside of a drawer or closet.

"It's a great way to bring a sense of happiness whenever we happen to see it," she says.

Other unique places to add a splash of colour are inside cabinets, the backs of open bookshelves, inside kitchen cabinets and closets. Having a bit of colour in these more utilitarian spaces will add a bit of unexpected spice to your space.

The key, adds Bell, is to use this time, after the leaves fall and before the snow flies and the holidays overtake our lives, to make our surroundings just right for us. "That is the perfect fall gift we can give to ourselves."

Chang's collection of Beauti-Tone paints is available exclusively at Home Hardware, Home Building Centre and Home Hardware Building Centre locations across Canada.

This collection embraces the passion for colour, texture and home decor shared by Beauti-Tone and Chang.

It offers an extensive selection of sophisticated and striking shades designed to complement any person's distinctive style and inspire Canadians to inject the same kind of beauty and colour into their homes that they do when adding to their wardrobe.

The fall season is a great time to try a new colour in your home. Add in rich wood tones, nubby throw rugs and comfy furniture throws to make your space a cocoon of comfort.

Darker wall colour will actually make you feel warmer and can add drama to your decor. Paint an accent wall behind the bed or behind the sofa to add instant pizzazz to your space. Balance the rich colour with lighter wall colour to keep things light and airy.

White trim around windows and doors against a rich focal colour will make your room pop. Bring in mirrors to reflect much-needed natural daylight during these shorter days of fall and winter. Consider additional lighting, as well, to help ward off the winter blues.

Yes, winter is coming. Yes, many of us dread it. But a change in your decor can keep your spirits lifted during the short days of winter. Sometimes a change is as good as a rest.
