Question: I've tried to grow different kinds of tomatoes and the same issue occurs (they look healthy, but bottom rot appears). I've tried spikes, and other products to help curb this and end up with the same results. This is the third year of growing rotten tomatoes. Can you help? P.S. I grow my plants in pots and boxes. Thanks. Marcel, Winnipeg
Answer: Sounds like you are dealing with a disease known as black end rot, which generally appears on healthy plants. The disease is caused by inconsistent watering or a calcium deficiency. Water in greater amounts, less often but regularly and deep into the soil. Add composted soil or fertilizer around tomatoes.
Question: Do you have any suggestions for getting the urine smell out of a mattress? Thanks. Charlotte, Winnipeg
Answer: Into a spray bottle combine; 1/2 cup water, one tablespoon household ammonia, 1/4 teaspoon dish soap and quarter cup of three per cent hydrogen peroxide. Spray stain liberally and cover the area with plastic wrap. Place heavy books on top of the plastic for six hours. Blot with warm water. Leave to air dry.

Re: Smelly dog
Hi Reena,
Just read about the Golden Retriever and bad odour. We also have a stinky Golden and it is from her ears. Because Golden's have long ears, they do not dry out well after swimming so their ears get infected and have smelly discharge. There is an ear wash from the vet to put into their ears after swimming and generally daily that helps with keeping them clean and dry. The vet can examine the ears to see if an antibiotic is needed, we have had our dog on them a few times already. Hope this helps. Eileen
Hi Reena,
I use a dog shampoo I purchased at Lynn's Pet Professional on Brady Road. It's called EZ Out, works great and has a very nice scent. Dog smells nice for at least two weeks. It's expensive ($25 for approximately 500 millilitres) but very, very good. Worth a try. Lisa
