A retreat owned by rocker Tom Petty at the time of his death is on the market in Lake Sherwood, an area near Thousand Oaks, Calif., for US$5.495 million. A year ago, the home was listed for US$5.895 million, records show.
Set at the end of a steep road on a private cul-de-sac, the rustic home has three bedrooms and three bathrooms within its 5,300 square feet of living space. There are lake and mountain views from the master suite, living and dining rooms and balconies.
Built in 1931 and later expanded, the house features hardwood floors, vaulted and beamed ceilings and a massive fireplace in the great room. Locally sourced fieldstone lines the exterior, the courtyard entry and parts of the interior.
Outdoors, lush landscaping and mature olive and cypress trees give the property a relaxed vibe. At the edge of the property is 40 metres of lake frontage, a boat ramp and a dock.
Petty, who died last year at 66, gained fame in the late 1970s as the frontman of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The band’s hits include Breakdown, Free Fallin’ and Don’t Do Me Like That.
The singer-songwriter later embarked on a successful solo career that included the albums Full Moon Fever and Highway Companion.
Petty bought the home more than a decade ago for about US$4.41 million, records show.

Sitting on a leafy lot of about half an acre, the traditional-style home is next door to another property owned by the couple’s trust.
Built in 1922 and since updated, the shingled two-storey structure has three bedrooms and 3¾ bathrooms within nearly 4,000 square feet of interior space.
A wide front porch runs across the front of the home, which opens to a sunlit living and dining room with a river rock fireplace. Other spaces include a family room, an updated kitchen and a wine cellar. A one-bedroom guest apartment has its own entrance.
The property came to market in November and sold in less than two months, records show.
Danson, 70, has scores of credits, including the sitcom Cheers and the shows CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Fargo and Damages.
He currently stars in the NBC comedy, The Good Place.
Steenburgen, 64, won an Oscar for her supporting role in the 1980 film Melvin and Howard. She currently appears on the sitcom The Last Man on Earth.
