Surrounded by mature trees, this home is a rustic masterpiece.

The dining room’s calling card is a wall of windows that looks out onto all the gorgeous trees that run along the side of the home.

Quiet, private and lush, the backyard is a serene sanctuary.

Natural materials abound in the kitchen, from tyndall stone flooring and countertops to a butcher block-style island.

The cosy living room’s centerpiece is an original fieldstone wood burning fireplace with modern insert.

As time-challenged city dwellers, there are times when we all wish that we could live a simpler, more stripped-down life.

Val Miller says she just listed a home in the RM of Springfield that would make that dream a reality.

“Its rustic charm reminds you of simpler times,” she says of the cedar-clad bungalow, which was built back in 1913. “This home is the perfect blend of country living. You feel like you’re in your own little world, yet all the amenities you need are nearby.”

Indeed, it’s a bit of a drive to get to Lorne Hill Road off Lagimodiere Boulevard north, winding your way in past ancient trees and a quarry filled with azure-blue water.

However, as the saying goes, it was worth the trip.

Once you pull into the driveway, you’re surrounded by huge swaying pines, ancient oaks, large cedars, elm trees, Manitoba maples and giant poplars.

Best of all, you don’t hear a sound, except the birds chirping and wind rustling through all the trees that frame the cedar-clad home, which has a lovely gabled front.

Take the covered entrance inside, and you immediately step into a home that possesses gobs of natural, unforced rustic charm.

“While the home was built in 1913, it was reimagined and refurbished by Gary Hilderman, a talented landscape architect who designed the Oodena Celebration Circle, Leo Mol Sculpture Garden and the Forks Commemorative Plaza,” says Miller. “He did it in such as way that the natural world blends beautifully inside and outside the house.”

The home’s rustic charm is immediately on display, a living room with a gorgeous fieldstone wood burning fireplace welcoming you inside.

Then, there are all the natural materials that were used on the walls, ceilings and floors.

“What I really love about this house is that it features natural building products such as ceilings and walls lined with untreated Jack Pine, and floors and counters that were laid using Manitoba Tyndall Stone. The feel those materials create is amazing.”

Turns out, you essentially go from one amazing space as you walk through the lovingly maintained home.

Step through a doorway on the cosy living room’s side wall, and you can’t believe what you see.

“It takes you into an incredible dining room that has a wall of windows that looks out onto all the trees on that side of the home,” she says. “The sunlight shines in softly, and the pine walls and ceiling gift it a warm, inviting feel.”

The next stop is the kitchen, which is once again filled with natural finishes.

“Both the countertops and floor are tyndall stone, while the island is a laminated butcher block type wood. Stainless appliances add a modern touch, while more of the pine paneling ties it in with the rest of the home.”

Miller adds that the main floor — which also offers a main floor laundry room and a comfy TV room — is finished off by one very special space.

“It’s set in the right-hand corner of the home and is surrounded by windows that look out to the wonderfully treed backyard, which is filled with birds and all kinds of wonderful critters that come to visit every now and then.”

Garden doors on the side and rear of the home then provide access to an Eden-like backyard.

“I would say the acreage out back is a green prescription that’s calming and clean, and is surrounded by mature trees of all varieties,” she says. “You can relax out there in total, quiet privacy. And if you want to start your own farmyard, the property is ready for horses, chickens or whatever animals you love at the end of a treed path with an enclosed field and outbuildings.”

An upper level with a lovely primary bedroom, two secondary bedrooms and main bath with a jetted soaker tub then finish off the amazing home, which is zoned rural residential.

“This property is truly one of a kind,” Miller says. “Being over 100 years old, the home is a piece of Manitoba history, as it was once part of a plan to have a residential community in the area with a golf course, which is now the quarry. If you want to get back to living a quieter, simpler life in a natural home in natural surroundings, you couldn’t find a better place to do it.”
