There’s no shortage of space, style or natural light in the user-friendly main living area.

Style and utility coexist in harmony in the functional kitchen/dining area.

Defined by a tray ceiling and surrounded by beautiful finishes, including a brick feature wall with linear fireplace, the great room offers all the space and style a family could hope for.

When it comes to seeking a dwelling suitable for a large family, size is paramount.

There are simple reasons a family of five or six needs a home that offers more than 2,000 sq. ft. of living space.

The first is that when at home, they’ll need more than adequate space to spread out — to play, cook and, of course, relax.

Secondly, a spacious residence will provide a large or growing clan the flexibility needed to manage daily life in as stress-free a way as possible.

Providing such an abode is intelligently designed, it will help create order out of disorder, something big, active families need on a daily basis.

Maggie Demarchi of Maximum Realty says she recently listed a 2,323-sq.-ft., two-storey home at 7 Creemans Cres. in Charleswood’s Ridgewood West neighbourhood that possesses all these qualities.

“At over 2,300 sq. ft., this home is very spacious,” she says of the former Avanti Custom Homes show home. “When a big family is all at home, they won’t feel crowded at all. The home’s layout is excellent, and all the spaces are very generous in size.”

This trait is showcased in the home’s main living area, which exudes a wonderful sense of freedom and functionality throughout.

“The high ceiling and all the big windows that surround you really make a big difference — there’s so much natural light, and each area is so spacious and well-positioned. That makes family life so much easier and makes the whole area perfect for entertaining,” Demarchi says.

In essence, each space holds its own special appeal.

The great room — which is the first space you notice — stands out due to its gorgeous tray ceiling and brick feature wall with linear fireplace and large windows on either side.

Then, there’s the dining area, which not only easily holds a table for six, but has a genuine solarium-like feel to it.

“It’s just a beautiful space, with three large windows that let in so much natural light,” Demarchi says. “It also has a patio door on its side wall next to the kitchen that takes you out to a big composite deck that’s perfect to barbecue on.”

Last, but certainly not least, there’s the adjacent island kitchen.

“One of the features I like best is the eight-foot pantry door — it’s a very nice touch,” she says. “You also get all the show-home extras with quartz countertops, white cabinets with champagne-bronze handles, a grey-tile backsplash and stainless-steel hood fan. It’s a beautiful and functional space.”

Demarchi points to other subtle design features that add to the main floor’s innate functionality.

“There’s also a flex space on the main floor that’s currently being used as a home office,” she says. “It’s next to a powder room, so it could also be used as a bedroom. Another great design feature is a mudroom with closet and door to the double garage that’s next to the lower-level stairs. Kids or in-laws could easily access the basement by entering the home through the garage.”

An ultra-wide staircase with tempered-glass inserts and warm-maple railings then leads up to the home’s second floor.

Once again, the floor plan is cleverly designed.

A hallway to the left contains four spaces: a large, naturally bright laundry room and three large, bright secondary bedrooms.

The primary bedroom is situated to the right of the stairs along with the main bath to maximize separation between it and the kids’ bedrooms.

Another subtle design feature — placing the ensuite and walk-in closet before the bedroom — further enhances the wonderful feeling of isolation, while simultaneously increasing the sense of space.

“The ensuite is like a spa with its freestanding soaker, tiled walk-in shower and vanity with quartz countertop and dual sinks that have a storage tower between them,” says Demarchi. “And the bedroom is so relaxing with all its space and natural light.”

Add in an insulated and framed lower level that can hold two more bedrooms, a rec room and bathroom, and you have a thoughtfully designed, well-kept home that’s ready for a big family.

“This is a beautifully designed home that has all the space you need to raise kids from a young age into their teen years,” she says. “All the little things were done right, which makes it such a great home for a large family.”
