Just like you would change your wardrobe for the upcoming fall/winter season, so too can you change your decor so it will comfortably and beautifully reflect the current season.
Winter is a ways away but it is coming. Plan now for decor changes that will get you through the cold months with warmth and comfort. A few updates are all you need to have a decor that will take you through the winter season.
Warm fall colours and cosy textures are great additions to bring your decor from summer to winter. This doesn't mean that your decor has to be dark and gloomy, but do think about switching out light, summer fabrics, such as curtains, for textural, medium to dark coloured fabrics on the windows and on furniture. Comfy furniture throws and toss cushions in rich, earthy tones will stave off those winter blues and create a cocoon of comfort on chilly days. Warm colours actually make you feel warmer so opt for colours that give you comfort and provide style to your space.
Change the bedding to reflect the colours of the season and also trade in the light blankets for comfy quilts, duvets and blankets. Flannel sheets are soft and cozy against the skin and offer comfort during the cold winter nights. Extra pillows and throws will make your bed winter wonderful. Consider purchasing area rugs or throw rugs to stave off cold feet near the bed as well. An area or throw rug is a great way to introduce a fall/winter palette to your bedroom. Use the rug as a jumping off point for accent colours in accessories and bedding. A bedside basket filled with fuzzy slippers will be a welcome addition, especially in a guest room.
Our feature photo boasts layers of bedding in rich colours layered with textural accent pillows and an area rug for warmth underfoot. These are all easy changes to make to your decor in any season. This is a cosy vignette that is both stylish and inviting.
Fabrics to consider adding to your decor are knits, fleece, faux fur, suede, tweed and so on. Small touches of these fabrics in toss cushions or blankets are easy additions that can change each season. If you can find fabric remnants at the fabric store or thrift store you can use them to make simple cushions covers for your current toss cushions.
Patterns that reflect the fall/winter season include plaid, herringbone, small checks and pinstripes. Pay attention to the fall/winter clothing fashions for fabric and pattern ideas to include in your decor. If you have artwork or pictures that are summery in feel consider switching them out for ones that will set the tone for the season. Black and white photos of winter scenes in black frames is a good start and is a fairly easy DIY computer project.
Summer accessories, like light wicker accents, seashells and so forth can be replaced with vintage, hardcover books, chunky candles, gourds and dried flowers or twigs in a decorative vase.

A fall inspired table runner can help turn your dining room into a delicious space. Set the table with stoneware, coloured dishes and large coffee mugs instead of fussy china. Create a centerpiece with fall flora. A large vase of black-eyed Susans, for instance, will be a focal point of the table.
If you are up to painting, you can make small changes using rich, warm colours on focal walls like the purple wall behind the bed in our photo. This adds instant warmth, romance and richness to the room and is a small painting project that is doable and undoable with the seasons. Other places where you can add a splash of colour are walls above a fireplace, small powder rooms, a niche in a dining room or a partial wall in an open concept space.
You might also consider adding both colour and pattern by hanging wallpaper on these walls instead of painting. Imagine a timeless toile pattern behind the bed or an earthy paisley in a powder room. Yummy.
Small changes and additions are all you need to make your decor wonderfully warm and cosy for the long winter ahead. Use them to update your decor in a temporary way that can change with each season.
