When people think of country-style homes in Charleswood, they tend to think of homes on huge lots south of Wilkes Avenue.
And while the homes on those lots tend to be newer the lots they occupy — at least by Charleswood’s countrified standards — don’t always have a lot of trees.
Glen Williams says there’s no need to look south of Wilkes Avenue for a country-style estate when you can find one in the city.
"I have an extraordinary 2,792 sq. ft., two-storey home at 283 Oakdale Dr. that’s just north of Grant Avenue," he says. "It’s situated on an amazing three-quarter-acre lot with an abundance of mature trees. When you’re home, you feel like you’re out in the country, but the reality is you’re in the city close to all kinds of amenities."
Better yet, the home, which was built in 1996, has been extensively updated by its outgoing owners.
"Not only is the home in immaculate condition, by it’s been updated inside and out," says Williams. "The shingles were redone in 2017, the plumbing is newer, and the carpeting, hardwood floors, lighting fixtures and paint were all done recently. And the kitchen was redone two years ago."
While all the updates are a big plus, they’d be nothing without an interior framework that allowed them to shine.
Fortunately, the home’s layout was forward thinking. As a result, the home feels like it’s four years old, not 24.
"The home’s floor plan is just superb," he says. "It starts off with a grand foyer with marble-style tile floor and two-storey high ceiling. A huge window over the front door lets in tons of natural light, while a sitting room to its right opens up the foyer even more and adds light from a huge window on its front wall. This home is bright, spacious and very well-laid-out."
Everything unfolds logically from the foyer on in: there’s a den to the left of the foyer across from the sitting room, an elegant formal dining room to the right - and then there’s the thoroughly contemporary great room.
Williams says it’s a spectacular space.
"The first thing that catches your eye is the hickory hardwood flooring, it’s absolutely gorgeous with its colour variations. The renovated peninsula kitchen, which is set off to the left, comes with custom white cabinetry, a beautiful grey/white tile backsplash, quartz countertops, corner pantry and a breakfast bar that seats three and separates the kitchen from the eating area."
Turns out, there’s also another space tucked away between the kitchen and eating area — a four-season sunroom.
"It’s just an awesome space," he says. "Its ceiling and walls are lined with pine, and you can take in the park-like backyard through nine windows that surround it. Patio doors on its side wall lead out to a big composite deck and patio area with fire pit."
The great room is then completed by a fourth space that’s divided neatly from the eating area a family room that surpasses the grandeur of the fabulous foyer.
"I love it," says Williams. "It’s an absolutely stunning space with its soaring vaulted ceiling, gas fireplace with tile surround and floor-to-ceiling wall of windows. It finishes the great room off perfectly."
Upstairs — remember the home is nearly 2,800 sq. ft. — there are two huge secondary bedrooms, a huge main bath with soaker tub and a massive master suite that’s well-separated from the other bedrooms.
"It’s a private getaway that comes with a spa-inspired ensuite that offers a stand-alone soaker tub, five-foot shower with rain shower head and two bench seats, a white tile floor and white vanity with quartz countertop, dual sinks and a storage tower," he says. "It’s a wonderful space."
The same could be said of the huge lower level, which adds more than 1,200 sq. ft. of beautifully-finished space to the impeccably-maintained home.
"There’s a large rec room with media and games areas, exercise room, a bedroom, den and three-piece bath," notes Williams. "This home is exactly what you can’t get in the city, a great family home with about 4,000 sq. ft. of livable space on a huge lot that’s surrounded by nature. It gives you the feel of a home and cottage all in one, and has been beautifully updated throughout."
